An industrial IoT client

A modular sensing platform for detecting equipment faults remotely had to get from proof of concept to production, and earlier versions failed too often in the field.

The problem

The base unit takes plug-in sensors for vibration, temperature and gas, runs on batteries that cannot be replaced, and talks over long-range, low-power radio. Earlier versions had high field-failure rates. The product team needed engineering depth across hardware, firmware, factory and cloud, and needed it to flex with the workload.

What we did

Supplied an embedded team working inside the client's product team under its Product Owner. Characterised the sensors on calibration rigs and ran lifespan test benches. Built the factory test jig and the software that writes each device's identity and records its provenance. Wrote the firmware, with on-device signal processing to stay inside the power budget. Delivered connectivity on both regional radio bands, QR-code fleet provisioning, cloud ingestion, and a configuration app that builds its own forms. Code coverage above 90%, CI/CD on every commit.

What's simpler now

  • A platform that ships from the factory with its identity and provenance recorded, provisions in the field with a QR code, and reports into the cloud without anyone touching it.
  • One team, from the circuit board to the dashboard.
